Volunteer Opportunities

Poetry Center San José could not exist without volunteers. Although we collaborate with many organizations, including History San José, the Center for Literary Arts at San José State University and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, our volunteers are the lifeblood of the organization. There are many ways in which you can help.

We are seeking talented individuals to serve on the Program Committee. You will be an essential part of PCSJ's programming by assisting with the Blue Monkey Reading Series or readings at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library and other events. Share your communication and organizational talents with PCSJ and join energetic team members to bring diverse poetic voices to the San José area.

We are also seeking individuals to serve on the Marketing Committee, volunteering 1-2 hours per month. You can help us to draft press releases, public service announcements, copy-edit or maintain e-mail correspondence. You can also help us by distributing fliers/posters in your neighborhood or simply sealing envelopes.

Finally, PCSJ is seeking an individual to oversee the care and maintenance of the Markham House grounds and building. Situated in History San José's History Park, Markham House serves as Poetry Center San José's home where we maintain a library of poetry books, periodicals, video and audio tapes, as well as our administrative documents. We also maintain a display of artifacts pertaining to Edwin Markham. Help us create a pleasant environment for poetry workshops and events at the Markham House. You can help us inventory and stock books, ensure that the garden is watered each week, checking mail and voicemail, renting the house to literary groups for special events, or communicating any special needs for the Markham House to History Park staff.

If you are interested in volunteering, please call 408.297.3400 or email us at volunteer@pcsj.org. You can also email Roger Abe at rabe@pcsj.org.
