Louise Kantro worked in a hospital, county immigration, and held other usually part-time positions while her children were young. After receiving her California teaching credential, she taught high school English, and sometimes first-year Spanish, for twenty-five years. At the age of 49, in the middle of her teaching career, she pursued her MFA through a low-residency program at Goddard College.
After she retired, her focus became poetry and she has published poetry in many journals throughout the country such as SLAB, Glimpse, Trajectory Journal, Arlijo, The Willow Review, Monterey Poetry Review, and Song of the San Joaquin. She has been featured in anthologies such as Doomer Anthology, Rushing Through the Dark, The Anthology of New England Writers, Borders and Boundaries, and several Tallgrass (Outrider Press) anthologies. She has won prizes such as Grand Prize and second prize in the Westmoreland Arts and Heritage Festival; The Derick Burleson Prize and publication in The Best of Choeofpleirn, along with nomination to Best American Poets; and first prize in The Writer’s Place, and various prizes from the Ina Coolbrith Circle. In 2010, Pudding House Press published her first chapbook, Dwellingplaces.
She has three cats, plays bridge, has twice served as President of the local chapter of the National League of American Pen Women, and now finds that most of her poetry veers toward the political.

If you are unable to find parking on the street, there are two parking garages of note:
1.) 25 S. 3rd Street PARKSJ Garage (located underground, under The Globe Apartments), about 300 meters from Works/San Jose;
2.) 2nd & San Carlos PARKSJ Garage (first 90 minutes are free). This is a 5-10 minute walk to Works/San Jose.
